SST PURE® helps Pooley to Allianz Championship victory
August 25, 2003
MIAMI -- When Don Pooley first visited the SST PURE® Tour van two months ago, he probably never expected that the change to his clubs’ performance might lead to a victory at the Allianz Championship. But shortly after having his entire set of clubs SST PURE aligned -- the leading shaft-alignment process on the PGA Tour -- Pooley carded an eagle and five birdies on Sunday in the final round of the Allianz Championship to capture his first win since returning from shoulder surgery.
"This is a huge turnaround pretty quickly for me," Pooley told the Associated Press. "To prove to myself that I came back and can win again, there were a lot of doubts there not too long ago. It's a wonderful game now. "
Pooley, who underwent shoulder surgery in January for a torn ligament, first approached SST PURE while at the U.S. Open. Pooley said he wanted "to get up-to-date on the latest technology" and allowed an SST PURE technician to analyze and align his least favorite club, the 3-iron. After testing the club for two hours, the Arizona native was so impressed with the results he requested that his entire set of clubs, including his putter, undergo the same PUREing process.
“I never doubted that Don Pooley would win again, and after watching him hit PUREd shafts, I told him that he would win within a month,” recalls Dick Weiss, founder of the SST PURE shaft alignment process. “Of course, he didn’t believe that since he was just beginning to play again after rehab’ing his shoulder. He's a great guy and a true champion, and seeing him win the Allianz Championship is tremendously rewarding.”
To date, more than 180 PGA TOUR players have enjoyed the distance, accuracy and performance benefits of SST PURE shaft alignment technology. Using proprietary computer software and sensitive data-acquisition sensors, the SST PURE shaft alignment process analyzes the structural irregularities that exist to some degree in every golf shaft and locates the shaft’s most stable orientation. By assembling the club with the shaft in its PURE orientation, off-line bending and twisting of the shaft are minimized and impact repeatability on the center of the clubface by the golfer improves up to 51 percent. The process can be performed on existing clubs, new clubs or new shafts — steel or graphite — from most major manufacturers.
Headquartered in Miami, Strategic Shaft Technologies, LC, was founded by clubmaker Dick Weiss, who was the creator of the SST PURE® process. The patented SST PURE process of club assembly — deemed in compliance with USGA standards — locates each shaft’s irregularities and aligns the shaft to neutralize them, so that each club bends in the direction it should — straight down the target line.
Upon having his shafts SST PURE aligned, a player receives a personalized computer printout confirming the process and an SST PURE shaft label for every shaft that has been PUREd. The SST PURE process of golf shaft alignment is available at SST PURE licensees around the United States and internationally.
